NEW 20MVA CAST RESIN TRANSFORMERS FOR SYDNEY 09.07.2001 The largest vacuum cast resin power transformers ever made in Australia are being manufactured in Melbourne at Transformers Manufacturing Company’s (TMC’s) Brunswick factory. The transformers, rated at 20MVA and weighing 38 tonnes, were sold to Schneider Electric and will be used by Fletcher Construction Australia at the new Global Switch Sydney 1 building near Darling Harbour in Sydney. Initially two units are being produced, with provision for a third unit should demand grow. The transformers are designed to be installed inside the building and will connect directly to three 33kV feeders from the Pyrmont substation. The transformers convert the power to 11kV for distribution within the building. Each transformer is fitted with an on-load tap changer to ensure constant voltage is supplied to the building at all times. The transformers are manufactured using TMC’s vacuum epoxy resin casting system capable of casting two 500kg batches of epoxy resin per shift. The vacuum de-gassing and casting process produces a void free cast, which results in partial discharge free windings. The 24 hour curing process ensures a final product which is strong and hard as well as flexible enough to handle the thermal cycling produced by load variations. Traditionally transformers of this size have been produced using the oil filled system. That is, the transformer is wound using cellulose type insulations and then completely immersed in oil and sealed in a steel tank. The oil acts as both an electrical insulator and thermal transfer fluid. Cast resin transformers use modern insulating materials for electrical insulation and are cooled directly by air. The use of cast resin transformers inside buildings dramatically reduces the fire and contamination risks associated with the use of oil. Many buildings in Australia use TMC’s 1 to 2MVA, 11kV cast resin transformers for distribution within the building but this is the first time that such large transformers have been included within the building.
